Sofia out of town.

Sofia out of townNot many of the world's capitals are blessed with a high mountain massif as their natural decor. Mountain Vitosha is just 20 km.(12 miles) away from downtown Sofia. Its highest peak rises to 2290 m.
Vitosha is attractive in any season for sport, recreation and hiking. Two gondola and a chair lift take up to the ridge which commands a majestic view of Sofia. It takes a couple of minutes by car or public transport. Walking in summer will take visitors to the cool deciduous and coniferous woods, rippling brooks and sunny meadows strewn with flowers and berries. In winter Vitosha is excellent for skiing owing to the varied ski runs suitable for novice, intermediate and expert skiers, a good network of lifts and rope-tows, a renowned ski school, cosy hotels, nice restaurants and entertainment.
The Boyana Church on Sofia outskirts - a listed UNESCO building is a fine example of Medieval architecture with unique wall paintings.
The most impressive monument from the Bulgarian National Revival period rises admist the rugged beauty of the Rila Mountain, just 120 km from Sofia.
